Basquevolt, awarded by the European Commission’s EIC Accelerator to lead the technology and manufacture of solid-state electrolyte ‘Made in Basque Country’ in Europe

Basquevolt’s selection for the EIC Accelerator with a maximum rating of 9/9 validates its innovative technology and alignment with the European battery value chain.
The €2.5 million grant and the possibility of an investment of up to €10 million in the next round of capital raising will accelerate the industrial production of its electrolyte.
The company prioritises its positioning as a leading electrolyte supplier in Europe for solid-state batteries.
Basquevolt, the leading company in the development of solid-state batteries in Europe, has been selected to join the European Commission’s prestigious EIC Accelerator (European Innovation Council) programme, a high-level recognition of its innovative electrolyte technology for sustainable batteries. This achievement places Basquevolt among the 40 companies selected from a total of 1,000 proposals submitted, with a success rate of only 4%.
Basquevolt’s proposal has been evaluated with the highest possible score (9/9) by the programme’s reviewers, highlighting the strength of its strategy for developing electrolytes for solid-state batteries. According to the evaluators, the proposed technology is not only innovative, but also aligns perfectly with the European Union’s objectives of strengthening the battery value chain in Europe and advancing the transition to more sustainable mobility. The evaluators emphasise that Basquevolt’s proposal reinforces this European battery chain, consolidating the company as a key player in the sector.
A key achievement for Basquevolt
This achievement puts Basquevolt in a privileged position to accelerate the commercialisation of its innovative electrolyte for solid-state batteries, a disruptive technology that has exceeded the energy density of traditional batteries by more than 50%. This advance will enable electric vehicles to achieve more than 50% additional range without increasing the size or weight of the batteries. In addition, Basquevolt’s technology solves critical safety issues in the sector, which will open the door to the reintroduction of vehicles such as electric scooters in public transport, contributing to greater urban sustainability.
The €2.5 million direct grant that Basquevolt has received through the EIC Accelerator, together with the possibility of obtaining €10 million in the next round of capital increase, will enable the company to consolidate its position in the battery market and accelerate the implementation of its technology in real applications. This support not only represents a validation of Basquevolt’s technological innovation, but also recognition of the high potential of its business model.
Solid-state battery electrolyte technology: The future of energy storage
The solid-state battery electrolyte technology developed by Basquevolt is key to the next generation of energy storage. This innovative electrolyte overcomes the limitations of lithium-ion batteries, offering higher energy density, improved safety and greater sustainability. With the backing of the EIC Accelerator programme, Basquevolt will be able to move towards industrial production of this electrolyte and enable the electric mobility industry to reduce the economic cost associated with batteries, which remain one of the main obstacles to the mass adoption of electric vehicles.
Furthermore, the technology developed by Basquevolt can be integrated into existing factories, ensuring a rapid transition of the industry to the new generation of batteries, as it minimises the investment required for its adoption. This represents a significant competitive advantage, as it accelerates the implementation of the technology in the market without the costs and risks associated with new manufacturing infrastructure.
Basquevolt’s strategy backed by key industrial partners
Basquevolt’s success in the EIC Accelerator not only reinforces its position as a leader in solid-state battery technology, but also underlines the importance of public-private collaboration in the development of innovative technological solutions for the transition to more sustainable electric mobility. Under the leadership of Pablo Fernández Santos, who took over as CEO in March 2025, Basquevolt has defined a new strategy that is strongly committed to the development and supply of electrolytes for solid-state batteries.
The backing of key partners, such as the Basque Government, CIC energiGUNE, CDTI Innvierte, Ekarpen, Stellum, Iberdrola, Enagás, InnoEnergy and CIE Automotive, reinforces this strategy, providing the company with the necessary resources to consolidate its technology and drive its expansion in the European market. Thanks to this support, Basquevolt will be able to continue developing its electrolyte and advance the integration of this technology into a variety of applications, from public transport to light mobility and stationary energy storage.
The EIC Accelerator reviewers have also recognised Basquevolt’s strength in having a leading R&D centre in solid-state batteries such as CIC energiGUNE. This strategic collaboration reinforces Basquevolt’s capacity for innovation and underlines its commitment to technological advancement in the sector.
Three Basque companies in the EIC Accelerator: a reflection of the talent in the Basque Country
