CIDETEC Energy Storage participates in the InnoBMS project to optimise battery performance in electric vehicles
The project aims to extend the useful life of batteries by 33%.
CIDETEC Energy Storage offers its experience in the battery sector in the InnoBMS project, which aims to develop a state-of-the-art battery management software and hardware solution (BMS) to improve the performance and useful life of batteries in electric vehicles.
The aim of InnoBMS is to revolutionise battery capacity through an innovative BMS that will increase the volumetric density of the battery-pack by 12% and extend its useful life by 33%, reaching up to 15 years. In other words, batteries with the capacity to deliver more energy and with less deterioration. In addition, this solution will also bring significant cost reductions of between 12% and 9.7% for passenger cars and light-duty vehicles, respectively.
Within the multidisciplinary consortium that integrates InnoBMS, CIDETEC Energy Storage brings its expertise in characterisation and modelling of battery-packs. Thanks to its experience, it will focus on the implementation of battery thermal management control (BTMS) in the cloud, the development of algorithms for early detection of thermal risk events (TRA) and the detection of lithium electrodeposition, key factors to ensure the safety and efficiency of batteries.
CIDETEC Energy Storage will also host the TRA tests on cells in its advanced laboratory facilities, which is essential to validate the algorithms developed and verify the safety of the system in the event of temperature rises.
Starting in January 2024 and lasting 42 months, the project is led by the Vrije Universiteit Burssel and has a total budget of €5,672,894.38, of which €4,013,441.88 is provided by the European Union through the HORIZON EUROPE programme. The consortium includes vehicle manufacturers, Tier 1 suppliers, engineering companies, universities and small and medium-sized enterprises, all working together to bring this innovative technology to market.
