Itelazpi and the Bilbao School of Engineering inaugurate the exhibition “Emakumea Teknologian”
The exhibition, organised by the Bilbao School of Engineering (UPV/EHU) and Itelazpi, is made up of 33 illustrations by leading Basque women in the field of science and technology. It can be enjoyed until 8 March
The origin of the exhibition lies in Itelazpi’s awareness-raising calendar for Equality. Last year, the exhibition was displayed in several Metro Bilbao stations and on the Bizkaia, Araba and Gipuzkoa campuses of the UPV/EHU
The opening ceremony of the exhibition of illustrations by Basque leading women in science and technology linked to the teaching field of the UPV/EHU was held. The event was attended by Charles Pinto, director of the School, Xabier Zubiaur, director of Itelazpi, and Sofía Ruíz de Gauna, lecturer in the Department of Communications Engineering, as well as a representation of the women featured, students and teaching staff. The exhibition shows three generations of women (pioneers, current teachers and doctoral students), who have been, are and will be a reflection of female scientific and technological talent in the Basque Country. With this initiative, the School of Engineering of Bilbao and Itelazpi want to join the initiatives that will be carried out during the month of February around the STEAM movement, which will have its climax on 11 February on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Itelazpi’s Equality Calendar, the origin of the exhibitions
The meeting also served to present the 2024 edition of the Equality awareness-raising table calendar that Itelazpi has been drawing up since 2017. An initiative with which Itelazpi has wanted to demonstrate its strong commitment, helping to raise awareness in its area of influence on different issues and wanting to act as a driving force.
In the last three editions, the pages of the calendar have sought to support the movement to incorporate women into STEAM fields. In this way, the calendar has starred illustrations of women of reference, portrayed with great skill by the author of the same, David Fernández.
In the spirit of amplifying this commitment, last year Itelazpi signed an alliance with Metro Bilbao and the UPV/EHU to carry out an exhibition with the illustrations, which were recreated on large format panels and exhibited in the metro stations as well as on the campuses of Bizkaia, Araba and Gipuzkoa.
Alliance between Itelazpi and the Bilbao School of Engineering
The exhibition now on display at the Bilbao School of Engineering has been possible thanks to the alliance that has united the Bilbao School of Engineering and Itelazpi for more than 15 years. Among other things, this alliance allows students from the School to do work experience in the Basque public telecommunications network, make guided visits to the broadcasting centres, take part in the Final Degree/Master’s Degree Projects Awards and carry out joint research and prospecting studies in the telecommunications sector. Also, to promote initiatives in favour of one of the Sustainable Development Goals, Gender Equality, to which both entities are committed.
