The Abanto Campus consolidates its position as a driving force behind the European green industry after receiving the BM30 – The Bay Awards prize

Bizkaia, News

The Abanto Campus of the Basque Country Technology Park has been recognised for its role in the industrial transformation of Meatzaldea-Ezkerraldea in Bizkaia and for promoting an energy ecosystem that will mobilise more than €1.4 billion by 2030.

The Abanto Campus has been awarded the BM30 – The Bay Awards Metropoli prize in the Bateginik Saria category, in recognition of its impact on the industrial and energy transformation of the region.

The award particularly highlights the role that this Campus is playing in the revitalisation of Meatzaldea-Ezkerraldea, a region where industrial and mining activity was its hallmark. Today, that industrial past is being reinvented through a model based on innovation, knowledge and collaboration between institutions and companies to promote a new, more sustainable economy.

The project involves various public and private entities, including the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the Basque Energy Agency, Petronor and the Basque Hydrogen Corridor, as well as numerous leading companies in the energy and technology sector.

Thanks to this alliance, the Campus has become Europe’s first green hydrogen-powered technology park, placing the Basque Country at the forefront of the energy transition. The project creates a unique ecosystem involving more than 80 organisations, including research centres, companies and institutions, and is expected to mobilise more than €1.4 billion in investment by 2030.

Beyond institutional recognition, the award symbolises the consolidation of a new industrial model committed to reducing emissions and sustainable economic development. It is an example of how public-private collaboration can drive a more competitive, innovative and environmentally friendly industry, while generating opportunities for the region and its future generations.
