Elsa Cuende, Leire Ibaibarriaga and Raúl Prellezo will be part of the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) for the next three years. Prellezo, who is serving his fifth term, has also been elected chair of the committee.

The Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF), an advisory body to the European Commission on sustainable fisheries policies, has renewed its membership for the period 2025–2028, once again placing its trust in AZTI’s research staff, thereby reinforcing the institution’s scientific leadership in Europe.

In this new phase, three professionals from AZTI’s research team have been selected as members of the committee: Elsa Cuende, Leire Ibaibarriaga and Raúl Prellezo. In addition, Raúl Prellezo has been elected president, which is an important recognition of his scientific career and his role as a European leader in fisheries economics.

This collective appointment places AZTI as one of the entities with the greatest representation on the committee: 3 of its 35 members come from the Basque centre. This milestone consolidates AZTI as a benchmark in scientific advice that underpins the European Union’s fisheries policies.

‘This renewed confidence on the part of the European Commission is not only recognition of the excellence and independence of our research team, but also an opportunity to continue contributing rigorous and applied science to the sustainability of fisheries and their ecosystem, as well as the communities that depend on the sea,’ said Rogelio Pozo, CEO of AZTI.
