Mikrobiomik is looking for volunteers to become microbiota donors
Did you know that the microorganisms living in our gut can help improve other people’s lives? Mikrobiomik, a company within the Euskadi Technology Park ecosystem, is looking for volunteers to become faecal microbiota donors and contribute to the development of new therapeutic solutions for certain intestinal infections.
The initiative is being developed within the European framework for Substances of Human Origin (SoHO) and aims to help patients suffering from severe and recurrent intestinal infections, such as those caused by Clostridioides difficile, particularly in cases where other treatments have not been effective.
A simple and voluntary donation process
Microbiota donation is voluntary and begins with an initial questionnaire followed by an information and assessment process. Only people who meet the established criteria can continue through the donation process.
The campaign is aimed at healthy adults aged between 18 and 50. Before being selected as donors, candidates undergo a full medical and analytical screening, following the criteria established by bodies such as the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS), the Spanish National Transplant Organization (ONT) and the European EDQM Guide.
The entire process is carried out with the appropriate medical and confidentiality safeguards, with particular attention to the safety of both donors and recipients.
A contribution to healthcare and research
The gut microbiota is made up of millions of microorganisms that play an important role in our health. In certain clinical situations, transferring microbiota from a healthy person to another individual can be used as a therapeutic tool.
Mikrobiomik is developing a treatment based on faecal microbiota transplantation through four capsules, offering a potential alternative for addressing certain intestinal infections.
To continue developing this project, the company needs to maintain a continuous search for donors throughout the year. The participation of new donors helps expand and maintain a stable donor base, contributing to the continuity of this line of research and treatment.
