TECNALIA develops innovative solutions for the decarbonisation of the energy system of existing buildings in the Basque Country

Gipuzkoa, News

The research and technological development centre will organise a conference on the morning of 14 June at the Kursaal to explain these solutions for heating, cooling and domestic hot water, based on heat pumps that reduce CO2 emissions and save on energy bills.

The event will be attended by VAILLANT, ECOFOREST, TELUR, RIOS RENOVABLES, ALOKABIDE, the Basque Energy Agency (EVE), the Association of Air Conditioning Equipment Manufacturers, the National Association of Energy Services Companies and the Spanish Technical Association of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

The decarbonisation of existing buildings plays a key role in achieving overall climate neutrality targets. They are currently responsible for 40% of energy demand and 36% of CO2 emissions in Europe, mainly derived from heating, cooling and domestic hot water (DHW) systems. In this context, heat pumps are a key technology for introducing renewables in the heat supply of buildings, especially in combination with on-site renewable electricity production, e.g. through photovoltaics.

On the morning of 14 June at the Kursaal (from 9:30 to 14:00), the TECNALIA research and technological development centre will discuss its innovative solutions for the electrification of heating and cooling in existing buildings in the Basque Country.

The event will be attended by organisations such as VAILLANT, ECOFOREST, TELUR, RIOS RENOVABLES, ALOKABIDE, the Basque Energy Agency, the Association of Air Conditioning Equipment Manufacturers, the National Association of Energy Services Companies and the Spanish Technical Association of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. They will also present real solutions with heat pumps installed in both single-family buildings and in blocks of flats and new builds or refurbishments. And they will do so at a free conference open to the public, aimed mainly at manufacturers of heat pump equipment, engineers, maintainers and developers, public and institutional agents and associations. This conference will cover the entire heat pump value chain, starting with the manufacturer, through installation and maintenance, to the end user.

TECNALIA has extensive experience in the design and optimisation of thermal equipment for buildings. In recent years, it has worked on a technological solution based on decentralised heat pumps for the rehabilitation of the energy system of buildings, which can allow a renewable energy fraction of up to 70-75%.
