TECNALIA launches a pioneering laboratory for the design and manufacture of quantum sensors

Bizkaia, News

The Quantum Lab infrastructure, a benchmark in Europe, will create quantum sensors using technology based on synthetic diamonds

Quantum sensors are key to advancing new applications in the field of health, such as drug development, or for industry, with the design of new materials

The laboratory, located on the Zamudio/Derio Campus of the Euskadi Technology Park, consists of four areas to cover the entire process of sensor creation and manufacture: from the creation of the material to the preparation of device prototypes

The TECNALIA research and technological development centre has developed a pioneering laboratory for the creation of quantum sensors. It is a leading infrastructure in Europe, capable of designing and manufacturing quantum sensors entirely from synthetic diamond-based technology. These quantum sensors will be the key to advancing new applications in the field of health, such as drug development, or for industry, with the design of new materials.

The inauguration of the Quantum Lab, located on the Zamudio/Derio Campus of the Euskadi Technology Park, was attended by the Deputy General of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe, the Basque Government’s Minister for Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability, Mikel Jauregi, Jesús Valero, Director General of TECNALIA, and Joseba Laka, Digital Director of TECNALIA.

The Deputy General of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe, stressed that “this laboratory is an essential part of our Bizkaia Quantum Advanced Industries strategy, Biqain, which seeks to accelerate the transfer of quantum technology to industry.

For his part, the Basque Government’s Minister for Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability, Mikel Jauregi, stressed that this inauguration ‘shows that when research, industry and institutions work hand in hand, the Basque Country is capable of taking decisive steps towards the future’. He also indicated that ‘this Tecnalia quantum sensorics laboratory represents the realisation of one of the priorities of our Industry Plan: that scientific excellence translates into productive capacities and real industrial opportunities in the Basque Country.’ In this regard, Jauregi highlighted that quantum technology and artificial intelligence are strategic pillars of the Basque Country Industry Plan 2030. ‘They are levers for strengthening our competitiveness, ensuring our technological sovereignty and placing the Basque Country at the forefront of industrial innovation.’

Projects to boost business competitiveness

To develop the full potential of quantum technologies, TECNALIA has developed Quantum Lab, a laboratory that has required an investment of more than €5 million and complements the equipment with which it has worked on this technology until now. The infrastructure consists of four areas to cover the entire process of designing and creating quantum sensors.
