The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, announced yesterday the people and entities awarded with the National Innovation and Design Awards 2024, as ‘the most important recognition in Spain in the fields of innovation and design’.

BIOLAN has been recognised as the 2024 National Innovation Award in the Small and Medium Innovative Company category.

BIOLAN, a Basque biotechnology company, has become a leader in the international market of biosensorics applied to food control and safety through innovation, and has also tackled diagnostics in the health sector with its own innovative products.

This award is a recognition of BIOLAN’s business trajectory, an example of a firm and unquestionable commitment to innovation as the central axis of its business strategy and competitiveness.

BIOLAN Microbiosensores is a Basque biotechnology company, leader in the application of biosensor technology in the food sector, responding since 2009 to the widespread need in the food sector for fast, simple and effective analytical and diagnostic tools to control food quality and safety.

Throughout its history, BIOLAN has been developing and marketing different analytical and diagnostic tools, mainly based on biosensors, for the quantification of parameters of interest in the food industry, achieving a diversification of markets, ranging from the fisheries sector with the determination of histamine, crustaceans with the control of sulphite, the dairy sector for the quantification of lactose, the meat sector with the measurement of nitrite, as well as the solution for the measurement of salt in all types of food, among others.

In 2014, it identified the opportunity to direct all its scientific-technological knowledge towards the health sector to provide new solutions in the diagnosis and monitoring of health by investing in a new line of business aimed at this sector, BIOLAN HEALTH, placing Point of Care (PoC) devices on the market, for example, for the diagnosis of lactose intolerance, and rapid tests based on immunoassays such as the COVID-19 antigen and antibody tests.

It was already in 2017 when BIOLAN understood that the digitisation of its products and its own processes constituted an opportunity to improve its competitiveness, and thus took the decision to address the digital transformation of its products and processes by providing connectivity to its biosensors and developing a platform for data capture, analysis and visualisation, a new range of products that was launched on the market in 2021. This digitisation effort by a biotech company like BIOLAN was recognised with the National Connected Industry 4.0 Award in 2022.

Innovation is innate to BIOLAN, based on the conviction that a value proposition with innovative solutions is the key to success and competitiveness, and has led the company to compete successfully in more than sixty countries with high added value products in both the healthcare and food sectors, with a continuously expanding product catalogue, enabling sustainable business growth.

Currently, BIOLAN’s commitment to innovation continues to focus on the two major trends such as digitalisation and sustainability, and from there, to work beyond technological innovation, also addressing innovation in manufacturing processes, internal management, labour welfare, and its commitment to respect for the environment.

This commitment to innovation underlies the entire organisation, with the involvement of a large multidisciplinary professional team of more than 100 people, which makes it possible every day for BIOLAN to continue to reap success and achieve recognition such as this National Innovation Award 2024.
