Basque Councillor Olatz Garamendi visits Itelazpi’s headquarters and shows her commitment to a public operator committed to maximum respect for the environment.

Itelazpi is consolidating its position as an essential operator for the operation of basic services such as radio and television, security, meteorology and rail transport.

The Basque telecommunications company is available to any public sector body and is currently developing the first applications that use the public network of the internet of things, especially in water consortiums.

Itelazpi, the Basque Government’s telecommunications company, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Decree 215/2003 of 23 September authorised its creation, and just a few weeks later, it started its activity in mid-November.

On the occasion of the anniversary, the Basque Councillor for Public Governance and Self-Government, Olatz Garamendi, visited Itelazpi’s headquarters on the Zamudio/Derio Campus of the Basque Country Technology Park. Garamendi was accompanied by the Deputy Minister for Administration and General Services, Polentzi Urkijo, who currently chairs the Public Company, and by the General Manager of the public company, Xabier Zubiaur.

Garamendi visited Itelazpi’s facilities with its Director, who explained the infrastructures, services and functions of the public company. The councillor spoke with the workers and received their impressions directly. Itelazpi’s headquarters hosted the weekly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Department of Public Governance and Self-Government.

Itelazpi was set up to provide and manage the Basque Government’s telecommunications services, especially the radio and television signal of the public broadcaster EiTB, but over the last 20 years it has managed to diversify the use of the public infrastructures it manages.

During this time, it has established itself as an essential operator for the operation of basic services such as radio and television, security, meteorology and rail transport. It also plays an essential role in the digitalisation of public entities and the territories of the Basque Country through the application of connectivity technologies.

The Basque telecommunications company is at the disposal of any public sector body and is currently developing the first applications using the public network of the internet of things, especially in water consortiums.

And all of this with great respect for the environment, which this year has allowed its work to be recognised by the European Commission as a “success story”. In this respect, he highlighted Itelazpi’s efforts and contribution to the management of the network of more than 200 telecommunications centres spread throughout the Basque Country’s mountains, implementing energy efficiency technologies, alternative consumption, environmental impact studies and birdlife protection actions.
