The cycle path connecting the Vitoria-Gasteiz Campus to the city centre is now open. The project was carried out by the Álava Provincial Council, 40% co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Basque Country ERDF Programme 2021-2027, and aims to facilitate cycling for the more than 4,000 people who work on the Campus. The newly opened section represents an investment of €2.3 million.

The Deputy General of Álava, Ramiro González, and the Regional Minister for Sustainable Mobility and Road Infrastructure, Jon Nogales, have opened the main 3.3-kilometre section of this new cycle route, which starts next to the Araca military base and runs to the Vitoria-Gasteiz Campus. The project will be completed by the end of the year with an additional section of approximately 2.2 kilometres connecting to the city centre area, currently being built by the City Council.

Ramiro González and Jon Nogales have highlighted a cycle path that “aims to enable the more than 4,000 people working at this Campus of the Basque Country Technology Park to commute daily to their workplace by conventional or electric bicycle, safely and comfortably. We are thus taking an important step towards promoting sustainable mobility between the Vitoria-Gasteiz Campus and the city centre, as part of a project co-funded by the Provincial Council of Álava and the ERDF 2021-2027 programme”.

Nogales has announced that “over the coming years, we will continue to promote and build new cycle paths both around the Vitoria-Gasteiz Campus and in the various districts of the Historical Territory”.

The Vitoria-Gasteiz Campus / city centre cycle path is 5.5 kilometres long and offers a route with very little gradient, with the exception of the short section leading into the Campus.

The route features a smart LED lighting system to facilitate use of the cycle path in the dark, enable year-round use and also ensure safety with a gender perspective. This system includes a cyclist presence detection system that activates only when users pass by, achieving maximum energy efficiency.

It also features a bicycle repair point near the Vitoria-Gasteiz Campus, equipped with tools for making adjustments and fixing minor faults.
