ICEX includes BASQUEVOLT and BCARE, the two spin-offs of CIC energiGUNE, among the main ‘cleantech’ start-ups in the field of energy

Álava, News

The “map of the Cleantech ecosystem in Spain”, drawn up by ICEX, lists all the startups in Spain “that are helping to transform the production and operation system towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly model”

The two companies have been highlighted for their potential to respond to some of the main challenges of the battery sector, such as improving the composition, reducing their impact on the environment and recycling and recovery of critical materials

BASQUEVOLT and BCARE, the two spin-offs from CIC energiGUNE, a leading Basque research centre in electrochemical energy storage, thermal energy storage and conversion and hydrogen technologies, have been included in the “map of the Cleantech ecosystem in Spain”, drawn up by ICEX together with El Referente. Both companies appear in the section dedicated to energy and have been highlighted for their impact in the battery sector.

“We have always been very clear that the development of business projects linked to the ‘green’ economy has a much greater potential than the rest, especially in a sector such as batteries,” said Nuria Gisbert, CEO of CIC energiGUNE. “This recognition is an endorsement of our commitment to developing companies of value for our environment and its future challenges”, she said.

The list compiled by the Foreign Trade Institute includes all the start-ups in Spain that are helping to transform the production and operating system towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly model. BASQUEVOLT and BCARE share presence in this list along with 220 other companies that, according to the institution, stand out in “the future of the energy transition”.

It should be noted that, according to ICEX information, currently only 750 start-ups, out of a total of 4,200 at national level, can be classified as “cleantechs”, which highlights the importance of this recognition. Furthermore, most of the companies are located in Madrid and Catalonia, so the inclusion of CIC energiGUNE’s spin-off ecosystem in the list allows the Basque Country to position itself in this field.

For its inclusion, those responsible for the list have valued its capacity to respond to the main challenges of the battery sector, such as improving its composition, reducing its impact on the environment and recycling and recovering its critical materials.

In addition to this recognition, BASQUEVOLT was recently named one of the 20 most innovative technology companies in the world to follow by the prestigious “Business Worldwide Magazine”.

BASQUEVOLT and BCARE are the only two business projects promoted so far by CIC energiGUNE and both have managed to position themselves as benchmarks in their sector, supported by the research and scientific development work of the centre in Alava in the field of energy storage.
