The 618 companies set up in the Technological Parks of the Basque Country had a turnover close to 5,800 millions of euros in 2021

More than 20,300 people work in the six Campuses of the Network, and 6,400 of them work in Research and Development

In 2021 69 new companies settled in, 131 national patents were applied for –of which 78 were granted-, and a joint expenditure in R&D of 589 million euros was registered

 

The Activity Report of the companies of the Network of Technological Parks of the Basque Country corresponding to the 2021 fiscal year has brought to light once again the strength of its business fabric, which turned over 5,779 millions of euros, which entails an increase of 7.8% comparing to last year. Moreover, 69 new companies settled in the different Campuses, which elevated the number of active companies up to 618.

The companies themselves have provided the gathered data, once the 2021 fiscal year has ended, and also show a sustained growth in the concept of Personnel. This way, more than 20,000 people work everyday in one of the companies of the Technological Parks, of which more than half are university graduates. Moreover, 1,847 are doctors and 4,448 are Vocational Training graduates.

The high percentage of professionals dedicated to R&D must be highlighted, which are 6,403 people. It is also relevant the youth of the workforce, since 3,534 people are under 30 years old. By gender, men continue having more presence than women, but the tendency towards the reduction of that difference is maintained.

Regarding economic data, apart from the joint data of turnover close to 5,800 millions of euros, the report gathers that the companies of the Parks have dedicated 589 millions of euros in R&D expenditure. Likewise, 52 of them count with the participation of foreign capital.

By activity sectors, the field of ICT is maintained as the most distinguished, with a 20% of the total, 4,801 people working in their workforces and a joint volume of turnover of 1,945 millions of euros. From point of view of the numbers of companies, the sector that follows is Bioscience. Nevertheless, in terms of employment, the second most relevant is that of R&D, while in terms of turnover, Aeronautics stands out.

Other relevant sectors are Engineering, Electronics and Energy and Environment.

Finally, among other activity data, it needs to be highlighted that the companies of the RPTE applied for 131 national patents in 2021, of which 78 were granted.
