Udalekuak on the Vitoria-Gasteiz Campus: work-life balance, sustainability and technology for the summer

Álava, News

The Basque Country Technology Park is launching a new edition of its Udalekuak programme at the Vitoria-Gasteiz Campus, a programme aimed at children aged between 3 and 12 that combines leisure, learning and an introduction to science and sustainability.

Since 2017, the Basque Country Technology Park, in collaboration with Hazian Kultur Elkartea, has been organising the Udalekuak programme at the Vitoria-Gasteiz Campus, a well-established initiative that takes place during the last week of June and throughout July.

Each edition brings together around 50 children, in a weekly shift format that makes it easier for families to organise their summer schedules. The programme, running from 9.00 am to 2.30 pm with a lunch service and flexible drop-off and pick-up options, serves a dual purpose: to support work-life balance for Parke employees and to bring science and technology to young children in a practical and fun way.

Learning through play in a unique setting
The Udalekuak combine recreational, educational and environmental discovery activities. One of the highlights is an introductory activity in which children explore the park itself to identify where their families work, strengthening their connection with the local area and making them central to the experience.

The programme includes technology workshops and activities linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, addressing issues such as climate change, recycling and renewable energy through hands-on activities. These activities are complemented by treasure hunts, gymkhanas, themed days, water activities, outdoor outings and one excursion per week.

In line with Parke’s strategy, these initiatives foster an early interest in STEAM subjects and help to inspire scientific and technological careers among children, whilst promoting values such as sustainability and equality.

The Vitoria-Gasteiz Campus as an educational space

The Vitoria-Gasteiz Campus becomes a key setting for the programme. Its surroundings, which combine modern facilities with extensive green spaces, allow outdoor activities to be carried out naturally and safely.

Elements such as ponds, local wildlife and eco-grazing initiatives are integrated into the activities, transforming the park itself into a living educational space where the environment reinforces learning and a connection with sustainability.

A tailored programme in Basque

Basque is the main language used at the Udalekuak, encouraging natural use of the language in everyday life. However, the educational team adapts to the group’s needs and offers support in Spanish when necessary, ensuring inclusive participation.

With stable demand year after year, the programme has established itself as a key service for families in the Parke ecosystem, adding value in terms of work-life balance as well as the education and development of young children.
