UNLOCK advances in the treatment of agri-food waste for its valorisation by converting it into plastic products

CIDETEC Surface Engineering is coordinating this project that will build a demonstration plant for the treatment and recovery of feathers from poultry waste.
The UNLOCK project, coordinated by CIDETEC Surface Engineering, aims to establish a value chain that integrates the waste generated in the poultry sector. This waste, once treated, can be used to create different biodegradable plastic products to be used in agriculture: geotextiles, trays for seedbeds, mulch films and foams for hydroponic crops.
On 9 and 10 November, the follow-up meeting was held at the AIMPLAS Institute in Valencia after a year and a half since the project began. During this period, an in-depth analysis of the poultry sector has been carried out, determining the main challenges and solutions for the new value chains proposed.
The feather treatments addressed are facing their scaling-up phase, including the construction of a demonstration plant in Poland for the treatment of such waste. Currently, poultry feathers have been successfully processed for the production of biodegradable plastics with very promising results.
UNLOCK aims to revolutionise the food and agricultural industry, with a value proposition that could eliminate the plastic waste generated.
