Sarenet inaugurates its new Data Centre at the communications hub in the Zamudio/Derio Campus
The company has completed a €20 million investment in a strategic infrastructure designed to strengthen data sovereignty, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI) and business continuity for companies.
In contrast to the highly standardised models of large hyperscale providers, the new centre will enable tailored solutions for each project, with specialised technical support, low latency and a close-response capability.
Based on proximity and operational control, the facility has been conceived under strict energy efficiency and sustainability criteria, using 100% renewable energy and its own photovoltaic installation.
Sarenet, a provider of voice, data and hosting services specialising in businesses, has officially inaugurated its new Data Centre (DC) at the Communications Hub in Derio – Zamudio/Derio Campus (The Basque Country Technology Park), one of the main connectivity nodes in northern Spain, with direct access to international fibre optic cables. This state-of-the-art infrastructure, in which €20 million has been invested, represents one of the most significant milestones in the company’s more than three decades of history.
The new DC has been designed to deliver high performance, scalability and maximum energy efficiency. The infrastructure has an installed electrical capacity of 3 megawatts, space for up to 340 cabinets or racks, and guaranteed availability of over 99.98%, a service level comparable to Tier III data centre standards.
Conceived as a next-generation data centre, it incorporates the most advanced technologies to optimise energy consumption and reduce environmental impact. These include an in-house photovoltaic installation and free cooling systems that make use of external air conditions to enhance cooling naturally and efficiently.
In addition, the technological platform is supported by state-of-the-art servers equipped with processors specifically designed to maximise performance while minimising energy consumption, further reinforcing Sarenet’s commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency.
The infrastructure is designed to obtain LEED Gold certification, and the company is also a member of the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact (CNDCP), a European initiative promoting climate neutrality in data centres.
Designed to host critical services with the highest levels of availability and resilience, the new facility will also enable the deployment of advanced capabilities such as dynamic network segmentation, protection against DDoS attacks and managed cybersecurity services, strengthening organisations’ technological resilience in critical scenarios.
Ultimately, this new centre will enable the company to strengthen its technological offering in connectivity, cloud, cybersecurity, AI and data spaces, providing businesses with a close, specialised and flexible alternative to the standardised models of major international hyperscale providers.
A commitment to proximity in a market dominated by global platforms
In a context in which a large share of digital infrastructures is concentrated in the hands of major international operators, Sarenet advocates a model based on proximity, operational control and specialised support.
In this regard, the new infrastructure enables full control over services and customer data, reducing dependence on third parties and ensuring that information remains under the company’s direct management. This approach is particularly relevant for organisations seeking stronger guarantees of digital sovereignty, regulatory compliance and business continuity.
In contrast to highly standardised models, the new centre will provide tailored solutions for each project, with specialised technical support, low latency and a close-response capability—one of Sarenet’s key differentiators.
“This initiative reinforces our ability to offer SMEs a comprehensive technological proposition that combines connectivity, infrastructure hosting, cybersecurity and specialised engineering services. This approach enables small and medium-sized companies to access advanced and innovative technologies with the support of close and specialised technical assistance,” says Jon Arberas, CEO of Sarenet.
The company also highlights the value of its proprietary infrastructure, fully managed by its own team. “This provides greater control over service quality, ensures high levels of reliability and delivers the flexibility needed to adapt to future customer requirements and technological market developments,” concludes Arberas.
At the inauguration, Ainara Basurko, Deputy for Economic Promotion at the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, emphasised that “Bizkaia is committed to enabling technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and supercomputing, with the aim of bringing them closer to industry to prepare our economic fabric for the coming years”. She also underlined that “Sarenet demonstrates that we develop critical digital infrastructures from Bizkaia. We do not only want to consume technology; we build our own capabilities. We can compete with advanced, high-value propositions based on technical expertise, specialisation and trust”.
AI focused on business needs and data sovereignty
Sarenet is committed to an AI approach focused on addressing specific business needs, as opposed to large general-purpose models that require massive infrastructures. The company considers that there is a gap between the potential of the technology and its real application in business environments, and therefore works on specialised solutions that enable processes to be automated more precisely, efficiently and reliably.
Sarenet’s new DC is prepared to host this type of AI project, providing organisations with secure and scalable infrastructure without the need to rely on the extensive technological resources of global giants.
The company also highlights the importance of data sovereignty in the development of AI. In this sense, it guarantees that customer data remains under its control, hosted in European infrastructures and protected by EU regulations, ensuring privacy, security and regulatory compliance.
Sustained growth and commitment to innovation
The inauguration of the new centre coincides with a period of sustained growth for the company. Sarenet closed 2025 with revenues exceeding €28 million and an increase in profitability of over 6%. The company currently has a workforce of 140 professionals and a network of more than 400 partners across Spain, which already generate nearly 40% of its revenue.
Commitment to innovation continues to be one of Sarenet’s strategic pillars. Investment in R&D reached €2 million in 2025, equivalent to 6% of turnover—a new record in the company’s trajectory.
The launch of the new Data Centre represents a decisive step in Sarenet’s evolution from its origins, when the internet was beginning to take hold in the Basque Country, to becoming a specialised operator capable of designing and managing next-generation critical infrastructures.
At the same time, the company believes that this infrastructure will help to strengthen the Basque Country’s positioning as a strategic digital hub for the development of cloud services, AI, international connectivity and advanced technological projects.
With this inauguration, Sarenet reaffirms its commitment to a technological model based on specialisation, innovation and proximity, placing at the service of businesses an infrastructure prepared to face the challenges of the next digital decade.
